2006 San Diego Parrot Head Club Year in Review
2006 was the 11th year of the SDPHC's existence. I have been involved as a leader in the club for 10 of those years. To my mind this ranks as one of the toughest years, yet many ways, most productive year of the Club's existence. In our history I know of two other times that were very tough periods for the club. The first time was the transition from a loose group of individuals, working together to promote charity and have a good time to an organized, incorporated entity with elected officers and by laws. The second tough period was a division of the club members over how much financial support we should be giving to one band that the club supported. This led to a bitter club election and a spin off of members into another club. In both case the SDPHC ended up stronger than before. 2006 was another year of great challenge and change. We started the year with the realization that when we were incorporated in 2000 it was not the correct status. Since 2000 we assumed we were incorporated as not for profit social club. We were actually incorporated with same status as a chamber of commerce. What this meant was that for 6 years we did not file tax returns or the annual fee that California requires corporations to pay. This meant we owed well over $5000 to the state of California and the IRS. It took us the entire year to straighten this out and pay off our debts. There was a major concern about how much money would be left in the Treasury after this experience, whether or not the club would be financially viable or not. As it turned out we were able to raise $20000 for the Monarch School, over $7000 for other charities, pay off our debts, and come out with a balance of about $5500, close to what we normally carry over each year. So, through the hard work of the club members the SDPHC was again able to overcome this challenge and move forward. We have filed for tax-exempt status for 2007. Once we achieve this change, we will become a non-profit organization, which will present us with a whole new set of challenges. Again, as has always happened in the past, the SDPHC and its members will meet these challenges and emerge as a stronger organization. We can look forward to making 2007 a great, fun year of partying with a purpose!
