Events in San Diego

Tuesday June 30 - Boxing Food at the SD Food Bank 6pm-8pm

Hi Phlock, It's been a while, but, we're heading back to the San Diego Food Bank to box food for an evening.

When: Tuesday, June 30
Time: 6pm - 8pm
Location: 9850 Distribution Avenue, San Diego, California 92121 (Just off Miramar Rd., not too far from UTC)
Note: Must wear close-toed shoes.
RSVP to: Wendy (wendy@sdphc.org)

What we'll do - basically, we'll show up. Then we'll work around a manual conveyor belt. Most of us will put cans of food in boxes. A few will tape up the boxes. You don't need to be strong. Just have a positive attitude. It's easy to chat with your friends as you work. The time flies. Info about the food bank is available at www.sandiegofoodbank.org.

After we're done, we'll get some food and drink at a local watering hole. Location is TBD.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact me. Feel free to bring friend and family. It's a great way to earn community service hours (especially for students). And you earn a point towards the volunteer appreciation party in 2010. A big thank you to those who already have volunteered at the last biz meeting and via email.

You Had To Be There

1st Annual Whitewater Rafting Trip on the American River.

Eight San Diego Parrot Heads -- Chuck Butler, John Steppe, Dave Mugg, Tim and Frances Walters, Tim Adams and Bob and Sharon Clark -- experienced the thrills of white water rafting on the American River. The first annual SDPHC Raft Trek included both the Middle and Upper South Forks.

We left San Diego on Friday and drove to our pre-set campground in Colima, in the Gold Country east of Sacramento. Friday was a night of preparation which included drinks around a campfire, good food and libations at the local bar, the Colima Club.

We started out about 8:30 on Saturday with a 45 minute drive to the put-in location of the of the Middle Fork, a 17 mile run of Class three to Class five rapids (class 5 is the highest level that can be run safely). The put in is just a hundred yards or so from the Class 5 rapid, with a 6 foot waterfall drop, the "Tunnel Chute." This was quite a wake up call with everyone getting soaked in the 50 degree water. While we all got wet, nobody went in the water on this rapid.

The trip went smoothly until we hit the class 4 rapid "Catapult." Bob, with a small assist from Tim Walters, was bumped out of the boat took a small trip down the river on his back. He was pulled back into the boat and we took off paddling again for the next class four rapid, "Parrall Parking" which bumped Sharon out of the boat though she was pulled back in by our guide Nate before she could really float away. We then had to hike around a class 6 rapid while our guides Nate and Josh took our two rafts down the rapid. From there until the end of the run there were no other swimmers.

We pulled out of the river and headed back to camp for a great BBQ featuring, Tri Tip, Chicken and Fish. The night ended with more drinks around he campfire and trip back to Colima. John Steppe, Tim Adams and Dave Mugg decided to stay late and walk the 1.5 miles back to the camp. Luckily Tim Adams managed to a ride back the camp, where they promptly woke everyone up while they continued to celebrate around the campfire.

Day two started early for everyone with a good breakfast and a 30 minute bus ride to the put- in location on the Lower Fork. This was a nice, short easy run with fairly constant class two and three rapids. Nobody went in the water, though there were one or two water fights along the way. We left the river about midday and finished with a great BBQ lunch before heading home. This was a great, fun trip with warm air and cool water. The ladies were very happy that the campground had running water, showers and toilets. Everyone on this trip committed to our Second Annual White Water Adventure in 2010.

The web site for Adventure Connection is: www.raftcalifornia.com.

Here are a few photos from the trip. See the photo gallery for a link to all of the photos.

Sharon Witzens Memorial 7th ANNUAL "Crawlin" for Charity PUB CRAWL

San Diego Parrot Head Club raised $4000 for local charities!!

On Saturday June 6 the San Diego Parrot Head held its 7th Annual Sharon Witzens Memorial Charity Pub Crawl, named after one of our valued members who participated in last year's events and passed away the following morning.

This was the largest and best pub crawl yet. 124 Parrot Members and friends took two double deck buses and visited 6 local pubs. Each Pub competed to see who had the best boat drink and overall tropical atmosphere.

The highlight of the crawl was Fran Muncy's Galley at the Chula Vista Marina. Fran Muncy, the owner, treated the participants to 2 hour of Jimmy Buffett music, performed by Ron Bell, and an award-wining boat drink.

For the second year in a row The Galley won first place, with Steve Rock's Fiddlers Green coming in second, and Kristy's MVP Sports Bar and Grill coming in third.

We finished the Pub Crawl where we started, the Paradise Lounge and Grill, featuring the music of our own Jerry Gontang and Stars on the Water.

As with all our club events this party had a purpose, to raise money for adaptive sports programs in San Diego through Miss Mission Beach. We were successful in raising $4000 for these programs. Thanks to all the bars and participants who made this our most successful Pub Crawl yet.

Rock N Roll Marathon - "Margaritaville" Water Station

For the 8th year, SDPHC served up water and a sport drink at the San Diego Rock N Roll Marathon.

It was held on May 31, starting at 4:30am. We 110 eager volunteers who enabled us to hydrate 23,000 participants!

This year, we came in 6th place for the water stop decoration contest. They're presenting us with a check for $250 for this.

Here is what our Mayor of Margaritaville, Chuck Butler, had to say:

Hi Parrot Heads,

Well, it's over. Another race is behind us. A great big THANKS to those members and friends that gave up a Sunday morning to help the runners. We had 110 people show up to make us a great water stop. Everyone did a great job. Our site was as clean after, as it was before.

I would like to give a special shout out to the following:
* Patricia and her crew, who did a great job of decorating the site
* Steve, who provided the music
* Wendy, who kept the sports drink going
* Lou, who gave us a new tiki hut
* Sue & Nancy who checked everyone in and distributed the tee shirts
* And to the 4:30 crew who helped get everything started

You will hear from me for the race next year. Again, thanks for all the help and support. Have a great summer.

Phins up!
Mayor Chuck
